Online Movie Review: Thunderpants

So I saw Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince the other day (I'll save that review for another time). It inspired me to look up a movie that I heard Rupert Grint did back in 2002 entitled, "Thunderpants." Through the miracle of YouTube, I was able to watch the whole thing.

It's about this kid named Patrick who has uncontrollable flatulence, to the point that it puts his father in the hospital. Rupert Grint plays Alan A. Allen, Patrick's brainy friend who has no sense of smell. This movie has a surprising number of other famous people in it, including Stephen Frye and Celia Imrie. Anna Popplewell (Susan from the Narnia films) is also in it, but that was from before she was famous so she doesn't have a speaking role. The plot of the film centers around the ludicrous scope of Patrick's "problem," and how he attempts to overcome it so he can fulfill his dream of being a space man. Things get interesting when Alan gets recruited by NASA and designs a rocket that Patrick can launch into space with his bum.

The film is full of silliness. Alan speaks with the super-posh accent that the Queen uses. About eleven or twelve times over the course of the film, Patrick says, "It was the best/ worst day of my life - ever." At one point, Patrick tours the world with "The second-best tenor in the world" because his bum can hit a high note. They make fun of Americans. It's the kind of movie that children ages 4-10 would like to watch over and over and over again - particularly male children. I bet they had a lot of fun making this movie.

This movie is perfect for a sleepover. You know, where there are about 5 or 6 of you in your pajamas and you're up at 3 am eating cold pizza. Unless you're 4-10 years old, then it's funny any time.

Beer Summit

White house beer, beer summit 2009, beer summit obama, obama beer summit, obama beer

In the era of Cold Beer diplomacy and the Internet, it's important to have a Web strategy for covering a Beer Summit.

We thought of improving upon that oft-employed strategy of "live-blogging:"

Live-chugging the meeting of the president, the professor and the police officer at the White House today -- you know, we start drinking beer at about noon and file hourly updates on the runup to the 6 pm EDT (six o'clock somewhere in the world) parley that President Barack Obama plans at a picnic table outside the Oval Office with Harvard's Henry Louis Gates Jr., and the Cambridge Police Department's Sgt. James Crowley.

The brew ha-ha (with a nod here to a good-humored colleague) over the president's public crticiism for the Cambridge P.D.'s arrest of African-American scholar Gates after forcing his way into his own home because the door was jammed -- police "acted stupidly,'' Obama said when asked about the incident at a recent prime-time televised news conference, suggesting it was emblematic of a persisting problem of racial profiling in America -- is no laughing matter, however.

So we'll probably be left with a more traditional strategy for covering an "event" which is not really open to anyone but the three beer-drinkers who will find a custom-tailored menu at the White House: Bud Light for Obama, Red Stripe for Gates, Blue Moon for Crowley.

Thiis is no Rose Garden ceremony. The president never promised them a Beer Garden, but the White House plans to take this avoided fight outside, to a picnc table behind the Oval Office.

They will have a "pool spray,'' which does not entail shaking bottles, placing thumbs at the top and aiming them at one another -- picture that for a moment -- but rather involves photographers stepping in to record the historic acknowledgement of frosty relations between the president and the P.D. If anyone is to have anything to say about it all afterward, this will likely happen at the traditional press "stake-out'' for visitors in the West Wing driveway, on the other side of the building where the picnic is staged. This isn't the sort of stake-out to which the sergeant is accustomed, however.

Seeing as how Obama already has all but apologized to Crowley for his "bad choice'' of words in the saga, there may be more talk about choices of beer this evening. Imagine the damper that racial profiling can put on a conversation over a few cold ones.

Which leads us to the observation -- part of the still-developing Web strategy -- of Anat Baron, maker of the documentary fillm, BEER WARS, an "expose'' of "the political power of Anheuser-Busch and MillerCoors'' who would have liked to have seen more independent American brewers in the mix of today's summit menu.

"President Obama is always saying to support the American made companies, but he should have chosen a local brewery,'' she suggests. "Mammoth consolidated beer companies are pushing out and squashing the American dream of the small business brewers, while they continue to compromise the taste and quality of the beer they currently mass produce.''

As big as Sam Adams may be, she notes, the more than 1,400 small breweries in America accunt for just 5 percent of the overall market share. She knows something about competing with the big boys -- as former general manager of mike's hard lemonade, which became a $200 million enterprise. She has been drawing on her experience to "expose the inner working of the male-dominated beer industry.''

Men and their beers, and racial profiling.

Which suggests that perhaps we should reconsider that idea of starting some live-chugging at noon. Film at six.

International Virtual Assistants Association

The term (virtual assistants), around since the Internet became widely available, encompasses anyone who telecommutes and does administrative tasks for other businesses, usually on a contractual basis. Most do tasks such as document preparation, paperwork and accounting. Some have niche areas, such as bilingual translation or creative services.

In the current economy, Jane Weizmann, a senior consultant at Arlington, Va.-based human resources consultant Watson Wyatt, said she’s seeing more businesses with a “part-time cadre or network of people” who telecommute and bring different skill sets to projects as needed.

The numbers are difficult to track because there is no formal certification and not all people doing similar work call themselves virtual assistants, but one small trade group, the International Virtual Assistants Association, said its number of new members doubled from 2007 to 2008. To date this year, the association has added 160 new members, bringing membership to about 900.

Association officials say the number of virtual assistants is increasing as companies lay off their administrative and executive assistants. Plus, the barrier to entry is low, because most people already own the equipment they need, such as computers, printers, fax machines and Internet access.

“You meet people at the conferences who say, ‘Oh, after I was laid off four times, I decided to become a virtual assistant,’ “ said Lauren Hidden, marketing director for IVAA. “They get tired of the insecurity of being an employee.”

The article cites hourly wages as ranging between $20-$75. As more companies downsize, virtual assistants can only become more marketable.

Many perform tasks outside of general administrative work. Some manage Twitter accounts or social networks, blog, research, translate, edit, market, analyze, bean count…the opportunities for “virtual assistance” are almost endless. I wonder whether the term is going to grow to encompass all kinds of online functions, and certain job titles–blogger, market researcher, translator–are eventually going to translate to “virtual assistant with blogging skills,” etc.

Regardless, the field looks promising, especially if you’re looking for a work from home opportunity. The International Virtual Assistants Association (www.ivaa.org) and independent sites like Home With the Kids (www.homewiththekids.com) can get you familiar with virtual assistant opportunities.

Iphone Hacker

In the past 24 hours we have seen major updates to not one but two software unlocks for the iPhone 3GS. Who says competition isn’t a good thing and who doesn’t love a good old fashion hacker fight? Let’s get it on:

In the red corner we have George Hotz along with his fresh version of purplesn0w RC2.

  • 3G(the network speed) issues fixed
  • Now only patches one file, CommCenter
  • Leaves no traces on your baseband after it runs.
  • Much more clean and reliable.

In the blue corner we have the iPhone Dev Team. And since Hotz released his source code, his competition used it to create their latest version of ultrasn0w .09.

  • Works on both 3G and 3GS
  • Doesn’t patch any mach-o binary whatsoever. (Doesn’t require a separate patch as each new firmware comes out).
  • Has no race conditions, no popups about “Missing SIM”, no network issues
  • Is almost 7000 times smaller than its nearest competition :)

So there you have it - two software unlocks for your iPhone 3GS and one update for your iPhone 3G unlock. You have to credit George Hotz for stepping his game up when the Dev Team has been dragging their feet. It really seems to have sparked up a good rivalry that we can all benefit from.

There is one major question though, how do you score the match?

It begins with Andrews referencing the peephole video of her, as she says, "I've been in the news recently about being in a hotel naked."

She later adds that, "I'm the girl that was videotaped without her knowing, without her clothes on in the hotel."

And her voice is clearly frustrated as she says, "I did nothing wrong and I'm being treated like f---ing Britney Spears and it sucks."

Deadspin.com has the full transcript.

TMZ.com says police found two members of the news media, and they were allowed to leave without incident.

Filling in for Regis Philbin on Regis and Kelly, CNN's Anderson Cooper confronted Jillian Harris on a very sensitive topic--sex.

The media host only asked what all of America wanted to know: How many guys did Jillian sleep with while on the show?

After trying to weasel her way out of answering by saying "I kissed 10 guys, but only 4 with tongue," Cooper promptly responded with, "I think I just threw up in my mouth."

7 Year Old Steals Car

Utah police say that a 7-year-old led officers on a low-speed car chase in an attempt to avoid having to go to church.

Dispatchers received reports of a young boy driving recklessly on Sunday morning. Klint Anderson, Weber County Sheriff’s Captain, says an eye-witness saw the boy drive right through a stop sign.

Anderson says two deputies managed to catch up to the boy and tried (unsuccessfully) to stop the Dodge Intrepid in an area that was approximately 45 miles north of Salt Lake City. The car got up to speeds of 40 mph before the boy finally stopped in a driveway and hid inside a home.

Later, when the boy’s father later confronted him, he said he simply didn’t want to go to church. The boy will not be prosecuted as he is too young and no citations were issued. Police, however, police did urge the father to make his car keys more inaccessible to children.

Rev. Ike is Dead At 74

The Rev. Frederick Eikerenkoetter, known as Rev. Ike to a legion of followers here and across the nation to whom he preached the blessings of prosperity while making millions from their donations, has died. He was 74.

A family spokesman said he died Tuesday in a Los Angeles hospital, two years after he suffered astroke from which he never recovered.

Rev. Ike's ministry reached its peak in the mid-1970s, when his sermons were carried on 1,770 radio stations to an audience estimated at 2.5 million.

He also preached his philosophy of self-empowerment on television and the Internet, in books and magazines, and on audiotapes and videotapes.

From the stage of the former Loews movie theater on 175th St. in Washington Heights, which he restored and transformed into his United Church Science of Living Institute, Rev. Ike would tell thousands of parishioners "this is the do-it-yourself church. The only savior in this philosophy is God in you."

He then would exhort the believers to "close your eyes and see green ... money up to your armpits, a roomful of money, and there you are, just tossing around in it like a swimming pool."

As payback for spiritual inspiration, Rev. Ike asked for cash donations from the faithful - preferably in bills not coins. "Change makes your minister nervous in the service," he would say.

Critics called Rev. Ike a con man, saying the only point of his ministry was getting rich from the donations.

They noted that he made a show of sumptuous clothes, jewelry, posh residences and exotic cars. "My garages runneth over," he would boast.

But his supporters said Rev. Ike's love of luxury had roots both in the traditions of African-American evangelism and the philosophies of mind over matter.

Rev. Ike was born in Ridgeland, S.C., to a father who was a Baptist minister and a mother who taught elementary school. They divorced when he was 5.

At 14, he became an assistant pastor for his father's congregation. He briefly preached in Boston before coming to New York.

He leaves his wife, Eula, and son, Xavier Frederick.

Iphone Virus

An interview with JR Smith (CEO of AVG) revealed his desire to have a full-blown antimalware solution for the iPhone, along with plans for a desktop edition of AVG to hit OS X. “I’d love to see it towards the end of next year,” Smith said of an AVG product for iPhone OS. “Really, it’s less about AV and more about real-time protection.

There are some major complications regarding the iPhone however, Apple don’t allow applications to be running in the background therefore a protection function that works in real-time would be difficult.

“We can’t add a layer of protection on to the iPhone today, so that’s a lot of the conversation that we’re having with Apple.” Smith explained.

With smartphones becoming ever more popular in the society today, it won’t be long before people are trying to exploit it for not so good ways, it’s a matter of time and I’m glad AVG see the gap in the market and have plans to fill such gap to protect our beloved devices!

MLS All Star Game 2009

SANDY, Utah -- Music blares in the background as 6-year-old Noah White steps up to take a free kick at the American Airlines booth at the 2009 MLS All-Star Carnival, a pregame celebration on the lawn immediately east of Rio Tinto Stadium.

If Noah can get the ball through the hole cut in the façade, he will win 10,000 AAdvantage frequent flier miles. Those miles might come in handy when it comes time to head home to Chicago -- 1,256 miles away from here. Noah shoots and misses just wide. American Airlines gives him 1,000 free miles anyway, for the effort.

Noah's entire family of die-hard Chicago Fire fans flew all the way to Utah to catch the 2009 All-Star Game, a couple of players in particular.

"Cuauhtemoc Blanco," says Noah when asked about who he's most excited to see. "And Wilman Conde," he adds when his dad gives him a nudge.

Such is the atmosphere outside the stadium gates. People from all corners of the country mill around, talking to each other and winning prizes. A group of hometown Real Salt Lake fans chat with an LA Galaxy fan while making posters for the game. On a day like today, the interleague rivalries are forgotten as MLS fans come together, united behind their collective best as they prepare to take on Everton FC.

"It's going to be 2-1, MLS wins," predicts Randy Sims. Randy is a Columbus Crew season ticket holder who drives to every game all the way from West Virginia. And while he doesn't hide the fact that he's rooting especially hard for Chad Marshall -- Columbus' lone representative on the All-Star team who will be playing today -- his spirit typifies the attitude so many fans have.

"I'm out here just to support the MLS teams in general," Sims says. "Geoff Cameron [from the Houston Dynamo] is one of my favorites, and I almost hate to say this but I like Kyle Beckerman, even though he is from Real."

From Everton fans to MLS fans from all over the country, it's as diverse a crowd as you will ever find outside an MLS stadium. But regardless of where they are from or who they support, they all have one thing in common -- they have come to Rio Tinto Stadium tonight in universal support of the beautiful game. And perhaps no one is prouder of that than the locals, many of whom have had this day circled on their calendars for over a year.

"We think [hosting the All-Star game] is awesome. It's a great opportunity" says Krissy Beecher of Kaysville, just an hour north of Sandy. Her son, Matt, and daughter, Sarah are most excited to cheer on the local players. That sentiment is not unexpected in this state, where soccer fans are fiercely loyal to their hometown Real Salt Lake.

"I like Kyle Beckerman and Javier Morales," says Matt. "But we like Tim Howard too," adds Sarah, speaking of Everton's U.S. international starting goalkeeper.

So while most everyone here has nothing but good things to say about Everton, Tim Howard, and the English Premier League, most of them also agree that MLS will win the match.

"All-Stars win 2-0," says Noah's mom, Sarah. If that prediction comes true, that flight home to Chicago will surely seem a lot shorter.

League of Extraordinary Gentlemen

The blanket of the dark night fell upon the guards nervously patrolling the exterior of the bank. And with it, came the supernatural feel of trepidation and fear. It was a feeling that all soldiers, no matter how brave, no matter how decorated, experience when they know that there are forces out there that they cannot control. On this night, such a feeling was felt by all.

Perhaps it was the fact that the members of the unit had been informed, by their commander, that the risk of the bank being attacked was greater than ever. All remembered the commander’s harsh, unforgiving words. All remembered the tone of his voice, the one that indicated a member may leave the unit and never return again.

The nervous sentry leaned back on his chair, snuggled in his post. He was overlooking the front part of the bank. Though such a view may have given him an advantage during the day, it was pointless now – night had obscured his vision. In fact, such a post was very likely to be attacked first.

A voice crackled through the soldier’s walkie-talkie, interrupting his thoughts. “Probably Perkins,” thought the soldier as he prepared to respond.

“Hey.”

“Hey.”

The sentry thought it unusual that Perkins would chatter at a time like this. Usually, the messages he received were direct orders, not friendly greetings. Now was not the time for such.

“Hey…ummm…(the soldier thought he could hear Perkins licking his lips nervously)…shift’s over. Move.”

Glad to be relieved of his duty, the soldier left his post and headed down cheerfully, where Perkins would take his place. He thought Perkins’s voice was unusually shaky, though. It sounded like he was forced to say something. It sounded…wrong.

Heart beating and soldier’s instinct taking over, the soldier burst into the room, where Perkins was to be found. He knew there was a breach, and Perkins was probably deceased. And he knew even before he entered the room and laid eyes on Perkins’s corpse.

No pulse. The guard took his finger off Perkins’s still warm neck and looked around. Cause of death? It wasn’t hard to identify – a knife to the back. Shock and paralysis was too much for the poor man. Blood loss would’ve finished him off anyways. But who?

The guard had no time to ponder about the assailant. Either way, he was long gone and had fulfilled his duty. The rest now laid upon his associates, who were ready to pounce the second the guard left his post and failed to inform his colleagues about the invaders. In which they did.

BOOM

Dark assailants poured into the hole formed by the explosion. With all of the guards outside, the attackers instantly overpowered the guard’s unit and entered the bank. The guards outside could do nothing – though they surrounded the attackers, they could not defeat the invaders, who held a fortified position in the bank already.

The guard, laying on the floor, shielded by his dismembered colleague and numerous house deeds, looked on in amazement at the brutal efficiency of the invasion. His colleagues died the moment they tried to enter the bank, being blown up by…rocket launchers?

Almost too shocked to move, the soldier eventually did sneak back out in order to call for reinforcements. The commander had been right – today was that day in which they would ultimately come.

As the guard approached the safe door, where he thought he could safely call for help, he felt a cold prescence, a chill that ran down his spine. And he knew that his time had come. He would now join his colleagues.

“Cheers,” mumbled the assassin, albeit with a French accent. The guard was unconscious before he even hit the ground. Three strikes to the back of the neck.

The dark invaders eventually caught up to the assassin, and pointed their rocket launchers at the supine guard. All was quiet.

“No,” hissed the Frenchman. “Leave one alive; he needs to live to tell the tale.” And with that, he suavely strolled over the unconscious body and took the latest British intelligence from the safe. Nobody saw a thing as both assasssin and invaders disappeared into the night.

The invasion made headlines as the world knew of the invasion. It was not the first time, though. Numerous other places had been robbed internationally. And the world knew of the coming troubles and the troubled diplomatic relations between each and every country.

It should be interesting, though, that when the Scotland Yard detectives examined the scene, they found an army helmet. One unique to that of the U.S. Army’s.

* * *

Secret CIA Base

Experts claim that the U.S. attacked the Bank of England -

The U.S. is denying any involvement -

Diplomatic relations have been broken between Germany and -

Protests call for the U.S. government to come out with -

The T.V. was shut off, but deep within the secret CIA base, the new reports rang within the heads of many at the conference table. CIA operatives rubbed their heads in confusion and the Secretary of State was taking an unusually long “restroom break.” Worst of all, though, they had no answers or solutions. And the President of the United States, who was sitting at the end of the table, demanded them.

“Well, any plans?” asked the President.

The members of his cabinet nervously wringed their hands and struggled to find the right words to say. What could they do?

The General of the Army rose up and banged his hand on the table. “I say we prep the army right now and go looking for those imposters!”

The Secretary of State, emerging from the restroom, scowled. “Then the other countries will think that we really did it. Wouldn’t it look suspicious, us building up our forces? And beside, we have no idea where to start. They struck internationally.”

Then ensued a lively discussion. Arrange for a global international force? No way, Jose, remarked one of the CIA operatives. Diplomatic relations have been broken already. Almost all of the nations had walked out on that U.N. meeting. Negotiate? I told you before, said the disgruntled Secretary of State. We don’t know whom to negotiate with.

At long last, the President dismissed the meeting with a wave of his hand. It was clear, though, that the pained look on his face indicated his displeasure. As the cabinet members and CIA operatives quickly shuffled out of the room quickly (the President started smoking; even though he had quit, smoking meant that he was incredibly agitated), the President walked out of the room to get back on Air Force One, to get back to the White House. He had numerous meetings scheduled today with foreign ministers and diplomats, and he had yet to answer difficult questions. And those reporters! Dear God.

The President marched over the lawn and was about to climb into Air Force One when a harried-looking (but well-dressed) man caught up to him and put his hand on the President’s shoulder.

“Wait Mr. President. I think I have an idea.”

The President didn’t stop walking. ”Let’s talk in the plane, Blair.”

As the plane took off, the President and his chief diplomat sat at the table on opposite sides. The President knew that Blair always had something – his chief diplomat had gotten him out of diplomatic trouble numerous times. Once, he almost put up his shoes when he was meeting with Arab leaders. Thank god Blair told him not to – it would’ve been worse than the time when he accidentally used his left hand to shake the Indian President’s hand.

Blair adjusted his tie nervously and took out papers from his briefcase. “I think you might take into consideration my plan…”

The President glared. “Is it the one about us staging a dramatic rescue performed by the U.S. to make us look good again?”

“No no, Mr. President,” blustered Blair. “I meant this plan.” And with that, he opened his briefcase to reveal numerous pictures.

Mr. President scanned the pictures. “What do these people have to do with preventing World World III?”

“They have everything to do with prevention, Mr. President,” explained Blair. “I was thinking of getting secret operatives to take down the enemy covertly. And these are the operatives.”

“Wait wait – why don’t we use the CIA?”

“If they get caught, we’re all screwed. They have little affiliation with us whatsoever, so if they do get caught, we could think of another plan.”

Mr. President took a deep breath. The smell of cigarettes filled the plane. The President looked at the clouds outside of the window. He could almost see a storm brewing.

Finally, the President said, “I trust you Blair. Almost more than anyone else. I’ll let you carry it out. But two conditions. One; you fill me in on all the details.”

“Of course.”

“And two; you are in charge of rounding those gentlemen up.”

Blair gulped. Too much to handle? It was too late now, anyways. And Blair felt confident that it was his job to stop Armageddon. “Yes. I’ll handle it.”

The wrinkles on the President’s forehead disappeared. “Good,” breathed the President as he got up from his chair. “Let’s talk once we get to the White House.” The President went off into another room to take a nap. It was a troublesome day, but he hoped that things would turn out fine. Blair had never failed him before – why would he now?

Blair breathed deeply as he scanned those pictures one more time. A young man turned MLB star player. A WWII soldier. A masked man. A known Communist. That former professor at MIT. The drunken African-American man. The ex-Nazi. And the well-dressed assassin. Not too much on him - he really was secretive.

He picked up the photo of the man with shades, the one with a Sniper rifle and distinctive hat. He was the one Blair was looking for right now. He was the one who, if found, could give a chance for the plan to succeed. It was a long shot, but it was the only one they had. With a final glance, Blair shuffled the photos back into his briefcase, adjusted his tie, and laid back on the couch. There was a long day ahead for him.

The plane sailed over the clouds, and into a menacing storm. But much to the pilot’s surprise, it subsided, and a ray of sunlight broke through. As the plane sailed off into the distance, Blair shielded his eyes as he squinted over the horizon, where a greater storm was brewing, one that possibly could not disappear so easily. But even though the light blinded Blair, he was glad for it.

What a great metaphor thought Blair. The metaphor, in fact, is the light being compared to a flickering, but bright ray of hope. A ray of hope that Blair hoped would be brought by a fantastic team assembled to meet the greatest challenge any had ever faced.

That team would be known as the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

I apologize if there is little TF2 content in the Prologue. I had to set the setting, and I didn’t want to spill all the beans…yet. Stay tuned for Part 1 of the series (which will have more TF2 involvement), and I hope all of you enjoy the series as much as I will.

Inkblot Test

The famed and widely used inkblot test, administered by psychologists to determine mental health, has been posted in its entirety to Wikipedia, drawing the ire of psychologists who argue that revealing the answers threatens to unravel years of research and potential analysis, reports the New York Times.

Psychologists are not only worried that the answers to their test have been given away, they are also concerned with preserving years of research attached to the psychiatric evaluation, which was created by Swiss psychiatrist Hermann Rorschach for his 1921 book "Psychodiagnostik." Despite the inkblot plates already being on other sites, industry professionals worry that further distribution of the images will render the test useless.

"The more test materials are promulgated widely, the more possibility there is to game it," said Bruce Smith, a psychologist and president of the International Society of the Rorschach and Projective Methods.

Aside from possibly undoing tens of thousands of papers of research associated with those specific images, psychologists worry about amateurs administering the test, and misreading their results.

The test, where subjects are shown a series of 10 inkblot plates and their interpretations of those shapes are recorded and analyzed by psychologists, have been posted in an article on the site along with the most common answers.

"I just wanted to raise the bar, whether one should keep a single image on Wikipedia seemed absurd to me, so I put all 10 up," said Dr. James Heilman, an emergency room doctor from Saskatchewan, Canada, who uploaded the images, told the New York Times. "The debate has exploded from there."

Hogrefe & Huber Publishing, the German company who bought an early publisher of the book, is considering legal action against Wikipedia. They will certainly have a difficult time, since the copyright has ran out since its original publication 90 years ago.

"It is therefore unbelievably reckless and even cynical of Wikipedia to on one hand point out the concerns and dangers voiced by recognized scientists and important professional associations and on the other hand, in the same article, publish the test materials with supposedly 'expected responses,'" said Trudi Finger, a spokeswoman for the company, in an e-mailed response to the New York Times.

Dr. Heilman compares the pressure to remove the test to the oppressive Chinese government's attempt to control information during the Tienanmen massacre.

"Restricting information is not what we're here to do," said Heilman, who is not swayed by the industry professionals who predict doom with the tests appearance on Wikipedia.

"Show me the evidence," he said. "I don't care what a bunch of experts say."

Media reporting tough times for tourist towns, you’d never know it by the long ferry lines to and from Whidbey Island. As an islander living in Langley for the past 34 years, ferry talk is right up there with recycling the latest rumor that a new restaurant is opening on the rock. It’s all about boats and food.

Fourth of July weekend was a biggie for the Washington State Ferries. I was on the morning sailing from Sidney, BC to Anacortes on July 3, and the line of vehicles in Anacortes stretched halfway into town. Here on the island on the Sunday after the 4th, there was a three-hour wait for the Clinton to Mukilteo ferry. Our son opted to drive back to Seattle via Deception Pass, which took him 2.5 hours. If there hadn’t been a huge traffic snarl/jam on I-5 between Marysville and Everett, he could have made it in two. Although “driving around” is not what most people want to do, it’s a scenic way to get off the island.

But don’t let the long lines keep you away — my friends who own businesses and shops on Whidbey welcome your staycation dollars. Here are a few travel tips for those who plan to venture out this summer. Some serious, some not so much. Bon voyage!

1. Don’t even think of heading up to the islands on a Friday after work. There was nearly a four-hour wait in Mukilteo for the ferry to Whidbey on July 3. Even Thursday nights have become long on lines, so get up early and catch the first boat Saturday morning. Usually there’s not much of a wait.

2. Make sure you eat while in the Mukilteo ferry line. It’s mandatory to either have fish ‘n chips or an ice cream cone at Ivar’s before you board the boat. Who cares if you’re headed to a big barbecue on the island only a few hours later? Islanders know that Ivar’s calories don’t count. And with the 12 new ferry holding lanes that were added at the Mukilteo terminal in May, you’re that much closer to the food source.

3. Don’t eat the food on the ferries. The popcorn is too salty, the beer/wine overpriced, the coffee lousy, and other than some fresh/healthy food alternatives like fruit and yogurt, it’s pretty slim pickins. Besides, you just polished off a tankard of Ivar’s Famous Clam Chowder with extra crackers.

4. Don’t dress like you’re going to a tropical island. When you board either the Cathlamet or the Kittitas from Mukilteo to Whidbey Island, you are not off on a Caribbean cruise. You’re still in the Pacific Northwest, so chill on wearing overly resort attire. And nix those white pants! We don’t wear that stuff on the rock, so if you wanna sort of blend in, go for the casual post-hippie/rural farmer/entrepreneur look. No fanny packs allowed.

5. Taking photos and/or videos is OK on the boat. We know you’re not a local, and it makes us sort of smile to see that you just took a couple dozen shots of a passing seagull. But please, no loud cell phone conversations; we don’t really want to hear about your weekend plans or how much your stock has tanked. Texting and Tweeting are fine.

6. When you arrive in Clinton on Whidbey Island, please note the speed limit signs. Again, even though you’re on an island, it’s really OK to drive more than 30 MPH all the way into Langley. We appreciate you soaking up our sights and scenery, but keep in mind that the driver behind you may be trying to get to the feed store before it closes.

7. No gongoozling. This is my favorite word that I learned from a friend who grew up on Washington’s Long Beach Peninsula, which is home to many a gongoozler. According to dictionary.com, a gongoozler is “an idle spectator, esp. one who stares for a long time at something.” Gongoozling is made worse by sucking on ice cream cones at the same time.

8. No goofy questions. I was recently up on Vancouver Island and stopped in at the tourist info centre in Qualicum Beach. The friendly volunteer said that they get some real doozies — like the person who asked if the island had fresh water on one side and salt on the other.

Intern, Boyfriend Tangle Tenn. Sen. Paul Stanley in Sex Scandal

What began as a government internship for a one-time honors student with a questionable past has become a full-blown sex scandal that ensnared a married Tennessee state senator and led him to resign.

Republican Sen. Paul Stanley had maintained a low profile until his announcement late Tuesday that he was resigning from the state Senate effective Aug. 10, after his affair with a 22-year-old intern and a subsequent extortion attempt was revealed to the public.

Stanley, a 47-year-old evangelical Christian with two children, said in his resignation letter that he has "decided to focus my full attention on my family."

Now that “New Moon” is done filming, producers are looking ahead to the third film in the “Twilight” saga “Eclipse.” And they’ve already made a casting change.

Rachelle Lefevre, who played Victoria in the first two films, has been replaced by Bryce Dallas Howard for the third flick, and it sounds like everyone is excited about what she will bring ot the role.

Erik Feig, a bigwig with Summit Entertainment, told press, “Rachelle brought Victoria to great screen life, and Bryce will bring a new dimension to the character.”

He continued, “The franchise is lucky to have such a talented actress as Bryce coming in to fill the role.”

Bryce dallas howard, victoria twilight, bryce dallas, twilight victoria, rachel lefevre

Bryce Dallas Howard will play vindictive vampire Victoria in the third film of the 'Twlight' saga, replacing Rachelle Lefevre, whose shooting schedule for a Dustin Hoffman film required her to be on the other end of the continent, the Associated Press reports.

We're not too torn about this one; we always felt that the ravishing Levevre would have made a much better Rosalie than Nikki Reed, and Reed's intensity would have been a good match for Victoria.

Howard will play Victoria in "Eclipse," in which she plays the lead villainess. Victoria's role in "Twilight" and the upcoming "New Moon" was pivotal but smaller.
"Eclipse" will begin filming in Vancouver in August, and "New Moon" will hit theaters in November.

Howard, the daughter of director Ron Howard and a new mom, played Gwen Stacey in "Spider-Man 3" and starred in M. Night Shyamalan's The Village" and "Lady in the Water."

Kai Chase

Kai Chase, Michael Jackson’s personal chef, is speaking out about the events on the day of Jackson’s death.

Chase, a Los Angeles native who trained at Le Cordon Blue culinary academy in Paris, has prepared meals for many notable celebrities, and had been asked to tour with Jackson on his “This is It” tour in London.

On the morning of Jackson’s death, Chase said she knew something was wrong when Dr. Conrad Murray, currently under investigation for his role in Jackson’s death, didn’t come down to get the juice and granola he typically took the King of Pop for breakfast. “I thought maybe Mr. Jackson is sleeping late,” Chase told the Associated Press.

The 37-year-old chef said Murray usually arrived at the house around 9 or 9:30 p.m. and spent the night. She recalls sometimes seeing the doctor coming down the stairs with oxygen tanks, but never asked about them.

Speaking about the day of Jackson’s death, Chase said, “I started preparing the lunch and then I looked at my cell phone and it was noon. About 12:05 or 12:10 Dr. Murray runs down the steps and screams, ‘Go get Prince!’ (Jackson’s oldest son) He’s screaming very loud. I run into the den where the kids are playing. Prince runs to meet Dr. Murray and from that point on you could feel the energy in the house change.”

Chase recalls walking into the hall and seeing the children there. She says Paris was crying. As paramedics raced upstairs to Jackson’s room, a small group, including the children, their nanny, a housekeeper and Chase, held hands and began to pray.

“We were all praying, ‘Help Mr. Jackson be O.K.’ then everyone was very quiet.”

At about 1:30 p.m. she said security guards told her and other staff to leave the property because “Mr. Jackson was being taken to the hospital,” according to the report.

Jackson was pronounced dead at 2:26 p.m. at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center.

According to Chase, Jackson did not appear to be on drugs or in poor health.

Tanning Beds

International cancer experts have moved tanning beds and other sources of ultraviolet radiation into the top cancer risk category, deeming them as deadly as arsenic and mustard gas. For years, scientists have described tanning beds and ultraviolet radiation as "probable carcinogens."

A new analysis of about 20 studies concludes the risk of skin cancer jumps by 75 percent when people start using tanning beds before age 30. Experts also found that all types of ultraviolet radiation caused worrying mutations in mice, proof the radiation is carcinogenic. Previously, only one type of ultraviolet radiation was thought to be lethal.

The new classification means tanning beds and other sources of ultraviolet radiation are definite causes of cancer, alongside tobacco, the hepatitis B virus and chimney sweeping, among others.

The research was published online in the medical journal Lancet Oncology on Wednesday, by experts at the International Agency for Research on Cancer in Lyon, the cancer arm of the World Health Organization.

"People need to be reminded of the risks of sunbeds," said Vincent Cogliano, one of the cancer researchers. "We hope the prevailing culture will change so teens don't think they need to use sunbeds to get a tan."

Most lights used in tanning beds give off mainly ultraviolet radiation, which cause skin and eye cancer, according to the International Agency for Cancer Research.

The classification of tanning beds as carcinogenic was disputed by Kathy Banks, chief executive of The Sunbed Association, a European trade association of tanning bed makers and operators.

"The fact that is continuously ignored is that there is no proven link between the responsible use of sunbeds and skin cancer," Banks said in a statement. She said most users of tanning beds use them less than 20 times a year.

But as use of tanning beds has increased among people under 30, doctors have seen a parallel rise in the numbers of young people with skin cancer. In Britain, melanoma, the deadliest kind of skin cancer, is now the leading cancer diagnosed in women in their 20s. Normally, skin cancer rates are highest in people over 75.

Previous studies found younger people who regularly use tanning beds are eight times more likely to get melanoma than people who have never used them. In the past, WHO warned people younger than 18 to stay away from tanning beds.

Cogliano cautioned that ultravoilet radiation is not healthy, whether it comes from a tanning bed or from the sun. The American Cancer Society advises people to try bronzing or self-tanning creams instead of tanning beds.

Greg Fitzsimmons Fitzsimmons

Comedian Greg Fitzsimmons has a treasure trove of disciplinary letters sent to him from teachers, school officials, rejection letters, newspaper reviews and more -- and he'll be putting them to use again in retelling his life story as a memoir, Dear Mrs. Fitzsimmons. Simon & Schuster bought the book idea at auction, negotiated with The Steinberg Agency and United Talent Agency. Publication date: 2010.

Fitzsimmons said he realized when he was going through his aunt's basement in the Bronx last summer that his mother had saved every bad report and disciplinary notice from his school years, all the way through college. “A normal parent would hide or destroy any evidence so clearly demonstrating their child’s failures,” he said. “But my mom preserves each one in its original envelope like a trophy case to remind me someday of who I really am, lest I forget.”

And now, of course, he'll get to cash in on those archival trophies, such as one note his parents received from his pre-school teacher: “Greg has been in the Center constantly but I cannot interest him in any activity. He only wants to sit and color. He sings along with the group although he wasn’t familiar with the ABC song. He is not familiar with a lot of things – he didn’t know what a Ferris Wheel was, how to wiggle, what a heel or elbow was, what a train engine or caboose is.” Fitzsimmons’s reply: “How the f*** did my mother drop me off at pre-school not knowing how to wiggle?”

Although most people probably know Fitzsimmons either through his stand-up or his radio appearances with Howard Stern and his own weekly radio show on Sirius XM's "Howard 101" channel, the comedian also has extensive previous credits as a writer. He has won four Daytime Emmy Awards writing and producing for The Ellen DeGeneres Show, wrote for HBO's Lucky Louie, Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher, and more. He's currently developing a sitcom with Twentieth Century Fox Television and writes and stars in Dog Vs. Cat for Adult Swim.

Madonna Biceps

Madonna is a woman of so many missions: Kabbalah, AIDS advocacy, adoption.

Here's a new cause she might consider: gun control.

No, the material mom and pop superstar isn't toting AK47s to Malawi, Manhattan and beyond. Madonna's weapons of choice are her buff-beyond-belief biceps. Recent images of the singer display a double-barreled mass of sinewy veins that strike fear in the hearts of paparazzi and raise questions in the heads of fans and critics:

How and why does a 50-year-old woman get her arms to look like that?

"Oftentimes when your body fat is really, really, low, as Madonna's is, you're going to see veins pop," explained Leslie Bonci, director of sports nutrition at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. "Her body fat is minimal, and she does a lot of strength training workouts that are going to build her muscles to look more visible."

Darlene Haynes

Darlene Haynes has been found dead with her 8 month old fetus ripped untimely from her womb. Police are, not surprisingly, treating Darlene Haynes' death as a homicide.

Darlene Haynes was about 8 months pregnant when last seen alive, on Thursday last week. Darlene's body was found on Monday after her landlord went to investigate reports of a strong odor coming from her apartment.

The body of Darlene Haynes was found dumped in a closet: the worst part of the story being that her abdomen had been opened and her unborn child removed. It is thought that the baby could have survived but would need medical attention.

Police are of course looking for who killed Darlene Haynes and the assumption is that whoever did either has the baby or has passed it on to another.

The truly appalling part of this crime is that it is not unique, such horrors have happened to others. Only last month Korena Elaine Roberts was charged in Oregon with a similar crime, cutting open Heather Snively so as to take her baby and killing her in the process.

Another similar case happened just over a year ago in Pittsburgh to a poor unfortunate called Kia Johnson.

In both cases the cause seemed to be the irrationally intense desire of a woman to have a child. Perhaps the same motivation that leads to baby snatching, but ratcheted up to a near insane degree.

At this point, until the police can tell us more, we'll just have to assume that the same abhorrence is what happened to Darlene Haynes.

I was never a huge fan of pavlovas, the dessert. They always seemed so airy and pouffy; I leaned more towards desserts with substance. If the pavlova was topped with fantastic fruit like sweet raspberries, etc., for me it was about the berries and cream, not the meringue. But it’s funny how particular people can influence you to change your opinions about a dish. If you watch Nigella Lawson make a passion fruit pavlova, you have an almost pavlovian response… Heehee. She makes things look so easy and her descriptions of food are so sensual, you are at least tempted to give a dish you would have normally eschewed another try… So Nigella is the inspiration for this dish, and the base recipe for the meringue is hers, google it if you are interested.

But increasingly, it isn’t JUST about reading an interesting recipe or watching a neat segment on a cooking show. I find that more and more I am cooking based on what I find in the markets, with what’s naturally in season, with bottled or canned goods that were presents from friends from their travels… I guess I am getting more comfortable in the kitchen. Willing to “wing it” or experiment, to sometimes total disasters and occasionally a nice result… So besides the Nigella segment i saw a few days ago, we happened upon some ripening probably totally organic passion fruit in the Bacolod market (photo above) that the vendor sold to us for just 50 centavos (1 cent) each and I took some of these home to Manila. Then I realized we also had a bottle of passion fruit preserves in the pantry, a gift from a friend who came back from a trip several weeks ago. A quick check in the freezer confirmed I had some frozen egg whites saved from a leche flan so everything was set to try a passion fruit pavlova!

Make the meringue according to Nigella’s recipe, but keep the oven a little cooler than she suggests or double up your pan to ensure that the bottom of the meringue does not burn. I did a two layer pavlova instead of one. To the whipped cream I added some sugar and several tablespoons of passion fruit preserves and spread the cream on the first layer of meringue and added some fresh passion fruit.

I topped this with another layer of meringue, more cream and lots of passion fruit on top, both fresh passion fruit and the remaining preserves. Serve soon after assembly. It looked great. It tasted okay. I particularly liked the sourish notes of the fresh passion fruit with the sweeter preserves and the cream. But now I am back to reality. I am still not fond of pavlovas… :) If you do want to make this and don’t have the preserves, just heat up some of the fresh passionfruit with sugar over low heat until dissolved and a bit syrupy… in other words, homemade preserves.

Hells Kitchen Season 6 Episode 3

When we last left the chefs of Hell’s Kitchen, Joseph was ready to throw down with Chef Gordon Ramsay because… actually… I don’t think any of us are sure why exactly. As he approaches Ramsay, security immediately steps in and waits to drag him off while the two exchange heated words. Joseph repeatedly calls him a “bitch” until Ramsay has had enough and tells him to get out. In the parking lot, Hothead says that any kitchen would be proud to have him work there. Uh, beg to differ, buddy.

The elimination ceremony continues on and the four chefs nominated are asked to defend themselves. Tony is eliminated and, with the men’s team down two chefs, Robert returns to the blue team. The night has taken its toll on the chefs and they understandably go pass out in their beds. Unfortunately for them, there’s a fire drill around 2am, which Gordon feels is a perfect time for a challenge. Oh, I’d want to kill somebody. The chefs are going to have to feed the firefighters and the team that feeds their side of the dining room first wins.

The menu for the challenge is chicken alfredo, spaghetti and meatballs, and garlic bread. Not exactly rocket science. Does it still shock anybody that some of these people can’t even make GARLIC BREAD? Though it takes them a little while to get started, the women pull off a win. As punishment, the men have to clean the firetrucks while the women head out in a helicopter ride to get pampered as their prize. Cleaning the trucks isn’t so bad. I’d rather do that than prep work in the kitchen. That’s the worst.

While climbing the stairs back into the kitchen, Kevin rolls his ankle and it looks nasty! Dave is also injured… having hurt himself while cleaning the trucks. What are these people doing?! After a trip to the hospital, they’re back but I don’t know how much help they’ll be at dinner service tonight. Two people need to be waiters and Dave (smart guy) and Lovely step up to work the front of house.

The blue kitchen is a bit of a hot mess but Van manages to turn out risotto that wins over Ramsay. The red team hits their stride and starts turning out orders but Lovely is having a bit of a tough time playing waitress. Even though they do a decent job, Ramsay declares them the losers saying that it was so much work to get anything done! Ariel is name the best of the worst (gee, thanks a lot) and will nominate two people for elimination. Lovely is nominated… no surprise there… as well as Tenille. Damn, that girl can’t catch a break. Neither is eliminated but Ramsay sure scared the crap out of them, didn’t he?

Hell’s Kitchen airs Tuesday nights at 8pm ET on FOX.

Panorama Towers

The high rise market hasn't fared too well since the real estate bubble burst in Las Vegas. When the high rise market first came to the valley, projects were virtually sold out before construction even commenced in some cases. Now the list of projects being taken over by the bank is the only thing showing growth. The Cosmopolitan, Newport Lofts, One Las Vegas and Streamline Tower are all bank owned.

That hasn’t stopped Panorama Towers from opening their third residential tower, beating the goliath CityCenter to the market which is scheduled to open at the end of this year. Panorama Towers was developed by Sasson and Hallier originally and was conceived as a two tower project initially. Following the success in sales for towers one and two, the project was expanded to four towers in all. Mr. Sasson split off from the project a few years ago and tried to develop his own loft project, Spa Lofts and had a stake in the Harmon residences in CityCenter. Spa Lofts was canceled at the end of 2007 and due to a construction error, the condos in the Harmon building have been scrapped.

Panorama Towers is located on Dean Martin Road (formerly known as Industrial), across the I15 freeway behind CityCenter. Residents have easy access to the strip via the Harmon overpass. The community provides a host of upscale amenities including a state of the art gym, indoor racquet ball court, concierge, resort style pool, Jacuzzi, valet parking, conference rooms, business center, guard gated entrance and 24 hour security with video monitoring of the parking areas.

The community now has models available for tour by appointment only in Panorama North (newest tower) on the 36th floor offering gorgeous views of the strip. Floor plans range from 790 square feet for a studio to over 3,000. Tentative pricing from the project sales staff has condos starting at $353,900 going up to $864,900. Depending on the floor plan, you’ll have views of either the strip or the mountains and only the end units A, B, J, K and L have balconies.
